The Seniors narrowly lose at Orchardleigh - 11th April 2017

The first team out was Captain Rod and Steve Uzzell who had a very close match which was halved on the 18th hole when Mike Norris missed his short  putt .

Game 2 had Alec Lyon, the Canny Scot, paired with Ken Jacobs; they had a very hard game against a very good Orchardleigh pair, both good 13 handicaps. Sadly though they lost but well played to you both.

Game 3 with Len Collin and  Richard Bartin, the Captains Bankers, and as always they did the job with a fine victory of  3&1.

Next was the pairing the crowd had all come to see, the Somerset Seniors Champion, Bill Bond, and Mike Poole; the Ant & Dec of the Seniors Section! They had the crowd spellbound and won 2&1.

Things were on the change and the Captain was beginning to think we might get something from the match.

Game 5 was Douglas Hamilton (just back from holiday in France) and Chris Hockey (just back from holiday in Cyprus).Whether it was too much Vino or Ouzo, or just Jet Lag we do not know but they lost 6 & 5. (my monies on the Vino as Douglas took his car to France) .

Game 6 saw David Kennedy and Peter Champness who could still win the match for us, but sadly lost 5&4 but well played to you both.

Result : Orchardleigh 31/2  Long Sutton 21/2

Thank you all for playing

Seniors County Scratch KO - Great result.

Seniors Scratch KO

The Seniors drew The Mendip in the first round of the scratch competition at Wheathill last Thursday.

Out first was Rich Bartin drawn against a current Somerset seniors county player, a tough ask. After 13 holes Rich was level par gross and more importantly 3 up,  a lead he maintained to win 3 and 2.

A great result.

Next out was Phil Bowditch who started badly but fought back before eventually losing 5 and 4, again to a county player.

Match all square.

Third out was Martin Hawkins who had a tough match against a past county champion but went 3 up early on. Martin maintained this lead winning 3 and 2. Well played.

Fourth out was John Parkinson , who , from tee to green was superb. The match went to the final hole all square but John's putter let him down and lost the hole.

Match again all square.

Out last was Chris Binding who also had a tough match with the lead changing hands on a few occasions. However Chris went dormy 2 up. On the 17th hole Chris put his drive in the trees, lost ball ! Now Dormy on the last. Chris's opponent put his tee shot on the green. However Chris responded superbly under pressure and put his tee shot pin high but just off the green. Facing a tricky downhill , right to left putt, Chris put it dead. Now his opponent had to sink his putt. He missed and we had won 3-2 .

Great result.

All of  the  matches were played in a good spirit and the Mendip team remained for a drink or two and share our celebrations.

Excellent sportsmanship.

We now face either Wells or Burnham in the next round.
