Seniors make it a double against Wheathill

Seniors V Wheathill 6th September

September has long been a popular time to take a holiday break and with a number of regular team members jetting of to the likes of Portugal, Cyprus, Italy and long haul to NZ, there is a distinct shortage of names on the availability sheets for the next few Inter Club Matches. If you can help out please put your name down and don’t be put off if you are a high handicapper, who is yet to represent your club. Two seniors in that genre have recently played and both confirmed it was great fun and they will be putting their name down again.

Vice captain Rod Tucker partnered Graham Brimble in the first match out against Wheathill. They secured an emphatic win 5& 4, with Rod showing a touch of class, chipping in on the 10th.
More class from our 2nd team out with Peter Hill confirming that Alan chipped in on the 4th to win the hole and Alan Webber confirming Peter sank a long put to win the match. Great team spirit and they finished off the opposition by the 15th with a win by 4 & 3.
Nigel Griffiths had the dubious task of carrying me in the 3rd match out, against Wheathill’s captain David and his partner Colin. We got off to a good start getting to 4 up after 6, due mainly to Nigel’s steady play. My chip on the 2nd stopped close to the pin & resulted in a “gimme” putt, which may not have been given later on, once the opposition had seen how poor my putting could be! Wheathill clawed it back to all square, but with Nigel’s par on 17 we teed off 1 up on 18, just needing a half. However, their captain David sank a long one to make par on 18 to win the hole and to halve our match.
Gordon Clamp represented his club for the 1st time in match 4 alongside Richard Bartin and I hear Gordon played exceptionally well, especially out of the sand. Even though they lost 3 & 1 and Richard hinted that his clubs may soon be up for sale, they both had wide smiles at the post match meal.
Jon Searl was pleased to see Len arrive in plenty of time to get warmed up before they teed off together in match 5. It was nip & tuck early on but pars for Jon & Len on 7, 8 & 9 was the turning point. The home team brought home a great win 4 & 3.
An even better result for the home team in match 6 with David Kennedy & Gavin Baker securing another emphatic win 5 & 4.
The overall result was a win for Long Sutton, by 4 ½ to 1 ½ which meant we had done the double over our neighbours from up the A37. Many thanks to all who took part.

Seniors lose to Orchardleigh

It was necessary to call up a couple of late replacements for this match and I much appreciated the 2 of you playing at short notice.
One of the subs, Andrew Elfick, had to get away a bit sharp post golf, so I put him out early in match number 1, with John Whitehead. They suffered a bit of a bashing, loosing 5 & 4, but after their match Andrew was good enough to find time to enjoy some banter and refreshment with the Orchardleigh pair before leaving.
Match 2 was lost 3 & 1 with the pairing of Bill Bond & Andre Blond coming up against strong opposition. Andre was representing the club in a seniors’ match for the first time and I look forward to seeing him on the team sheet in the future, as I do you Bill!
I teamed up for the first time with John Pearson in match 3, and our golf match was yet again, played in a really friendly spirit, against Orchardleigh v/captain Phil Jefferies, who plays off 7, and his partner John Scott. All 3 were excellent company and my partner came good, turning a very tight match (all square after 11 holes) into a bit of a “walk in the park”. Our h/cap examiner may have to keep a close eye on Mr P as he won the 12th, made par on the 13th (with a shot) & then won both the 14th and the 15th. We walked in for an early beer, having won the match 4 &3. Well done John it was great pleasure to play with you.
In match 4, I had my pair of bankers. Vice captain Rod Tucker and Steve Uzzell did not disappoint, bringing home a great win 5 & 4.
Peter Hill and John Whiting took on another strong pair in match 5 and with John playing some steady golf early on, they managed to get to 2 up at the turn, before slipping to 2 down after 16. But with Peter playing some great golf to win both the 17th and 18th in par, the match was halved.
Mike Richards came in as a very late replacement in match 6, only being asked to play about 2 hours before his tee off! He also represented the seniors in a club match for the first time and gave an excellent account of him, including a very accurate collection of the match fees! Unfortunately he and playing partner Richard Bartin lost their match 3 & 1. I also look forward to seeing Mike on future team sheets.
Overall we had just been beaten by 2½ to 3½ , a very close result. As always we enjoyed excellent post match food served up by Judy, Laura and Seb and our thanks to all of them. Seb told me he is leaving soon, to study at Kings college London, so I passed on best wishes for his future, from the seniors section.
