Seniors Friendly away to Axe Cliff GC 15-04-2019
On a bright but very breezy day, 12 jolly golfers from Long Sutton descended upon Axe Cliff Golf Club, hoping to avenge a sound thrashing in the corresponding match last year.
Captain Graham Brimble had every confidence in his specially selected team and was proven correct in his judgement with a resounding 4 and 2 win.
Match 1. Graham and his partner Bob Smith got off to a fine start when Bob parred the tricky first to put them 1 Up, and although halving the next 5 holes went 3 UP at the turn. Good dovetailing ensured that the match resulted in a 5 and 4 win for LS. Some excellent golf was played by all 4 golfers in the match but the LS duo never allowed the home team to get any foothold in the match, which was played in the correct spirit.
Match 2. The LS team of V/C Steve Uzzell and Peter Smart were Axe Cliff virgins, with neither having played the course before. They eventually went down 3 and 2 to a very good pair from the home club after being 3 down at the turn. Peter Smart hid his disappointment at the after match meal by not only polishing off his main and pudding, but then finishing off the captains cheese and biscuits. Congratulations to Pete for winning the nearest the pin on the 11th.
Match 3 saw the tallest pairing of the day, with Rob Hartley partnering Julian Stapleton. Again the golf was of a very good standard considering the conditions and resulted in a win for LS by 2UP.
Match 4 included the quietest pairing with Chris Hockey partnering Douglas Hamilton. Believe that and you will believe anything. DH got the team off to a flyer by birdying the first and was 3 up at the turn. The opposition fought back to 1 down, when again DH conjured up another piece of magic with another birdie on the 16th. Evidently some ramblers thought they had witnessed Tiger Woods in disguise. The LS team eventually winning the match on the last. Win 2UP.
Match 5 saw Long Sutton's answer to the 2 Ronnies with the 2 Daves. Messrs Harfield and Butcher played a fine match resulting in a 4 and 3 win. Dave H (first time at Axe Cliff) won the first hole, then fell to the quirkiness of the Axe Cliff course by never finding his second shot into the green on the second and running his second shot off the minuscule third green into the hedge. Dave B thought he had the 6th with a par only to be out done by Gilbert of Axe Cliff who chipped in for a birdie to go 1 UP. Dave H's drive to the 7th ended on the edge of the green, from which he won the hole to draw level. Dave B then took the 8th and Dave H halved the ninth. Both Daves won the 10th and Dave B halved the 11th. Dave Harfield then had the nerve to produce a trick shot on the 12th when his out of bounds drive bounced off the Green Keepers hut back onto the fairway, however, Dave B won the hole. Dave H took the 10th and with halves on the 14th and 15ths the match was won. Thanks to Dave B for playing with a bad back. He got his excuse in early.
Match 6 saw the experienced team of David Kennedy and Robin Ewbank take to the field. In a tight game the LS pair narrowly went down 2 and 1 with the game again being played in a friendly but competitive spirit.
Both teams enjoyed a very nice meal (some more than others Peter) after the match, in a tremendous atmosphere.
