Forty-two seniors assembled at Tiverton Golf Club on Monday 21st for Len's belated Vice Captain's Away Day, subsequently titled the New Captain's Inauguration Away Day! The weather gods smiled upon us and we were blessed with a rain free day of golf on a lovely course in tip top condition in spite of the heavy rains of the week before. We met for a bacon roll and coffee at 10.30 and then teed off in 11 groups from the 1st and the 10th. There was some confusion before the start owing to an error on the instruction sheet for the day. Originally thinking of playing in the strokeplay format Len had put down the team with the lowest score would be the winners but also stated scoring would be via the stableford scoring system. Rod Tucker and his team must have misheard the correction made before the start, or been fast asleep, leaving the field open to Clive Haggett and his reduced team of 3, which was made up of himself, David Kennedy and Martin Howlett, to sweep the board in spite of being a man short, with a team score of 85.
Clive also won the individual competition with a score of 41 with Nigel Griffiths second returning a score of 38. Nigel's Team comprising Nigel, Malcolm Betambo, Gavin Baker and Dave Butcher also came a close second in the team event with 84 points. Amongst the individual performances there were several scores in the low 30's but the next best score was 34 so well done Clive and Nigel.
The day was rounded off by an excellent meal even though the new captain and his team were made to wait until the very end before being served, which led to a lot of mumbling from members of his team saying they wouldn't be playing with me again if this was the kind of service I was given!!
My thanks to all who turned up and made this a day to remember and I am sure several people will be venturing back to play the course again in the future. My thanks also to Tiverton Golf Club for laying on the event for us and being such welcoming hosts.
