After two wins on the bounce, the Seniors melted in the heat at IOW or was it the late (12 noon) start that did it? No, none of the above, just a lot of error strewn golf, very evident in Match 3 as Captain Bill and playing partner Colin never really found consistency.
By contrast, the Match 2 pairing of Dave Butcher and Mick Capps proved successful with Mick starting with a birdie on the first. This was soon negated as Mike from IOW put his drive on the 2nd close to the pin for par. Mick then won the fourth and Dave got a birdie on the 5th by putting in from off the green. Mick won the 7th and Dave took the eigth after his putt for birdie missed the hole went up the green to then roll back to hit the pin but stayed 6 inches out. Dave also took the ninth with a par to go 5 up at the turn. Then the wheels fell off, when they managed to halve 2 holes over the next 6 as IOW reduced their lead to 1. Dave then won the 16th only to lose the 17th back to 1. Mick then came true again by winning the 18th. A nail biting game.
On course updates taken from 'thumbs down' hand signals suggested that all was not going well and so it proved. The Match 5 pairing of Franco and Gavin and Match 6 duo of Graham and John (Rooks) managed to halve their games and bring in a point between them.
Despite an overall disappointing performance, which was the reverse result of the earlier home fixture, we were blessed with great weather and really friendly opponents led by Captain Ian. In summary, the weather was great, the banter was good, the food was filling (sorry excellent) and the golf was...??
Thanks team for contributing to a good day out and representing Long Sutton Seniors in exemplary fashion!
Captain Bill's rating - B Minus (could do better - a lot better)
