Welcome to the Seniors Section of Long Sutton Golf Club. My name is Graham Brimble, and I have the great honour and privilege, to be the Seniors Captain for Long Sutton Golf Club for the coming year 2021. I am ably assisted by my Vice Captain, Stephen Uzzell(Steve), and by a very committed, hard working, and friendly committee. I would like to take this opportunity to thank last years Captain, Len Collin for all of his work over the past 12 months, in what was a very difficult period.
The Seniors section has grown considerably over the past few months and now stands at over 170 members, which I am sure is partly due to the huge amount of work carried out by our new(ish) owners, Stuart and Ann Hodder and their team, to not only the clubhouse, but the course itself. It is quickly becoming a beautiful parkland course that we can all be proud to call OUR club.
As a section, we carry out a full diary of events throughout the year, starting in early January, through to late December. The main Seniors day is every Thursday morning, with a variety of competitions, including, medals, stablefords, and team games, organised by a sub-committee and headed by me as Captain. There is normally a Seniors roll up held each Tuesday morning, but with the current restrictions in place this has been put on hold until things can resort to something like normal.
To become a member, we ask for a modest subscription of £10 for the year, and for the competitions there is a charge of £3 each time you play, which is then awarded in prize money. The £3 is paid in at the pro shop when you book in.
In addition to the Tuesday and Thursday games, we have Seniors Friendlies against other clubs in the area, mostly within an hour’s travelling time, on a home and away basis. These games normally start in April and run through until September. We have a reciprocal agreement with the 13 other clubs, where a charge is made of between £13 and £15 and this includes a meal after the match, as well as the round of golf. These matches are normally 12 aside, played in a pairs better ball format, and always played in a very friendly, but competitive atmosphere.
We as a section also hold two Opens a year. The Spring Open in May is normally a Texas Scramble, with the second Open, the Summer Open, held in August, with a pairs better ball format. We welcome some 180 players on each day from not only Long Sutton, but the majority of other clubs throughout the region.
As I am writing this we are still in the middle of the Pandemic, but fingers crossed, and with the positive news in regards to vaccines, we will all be able to enjoy a full year of good friendly golf, on our ever changing course.
If you are new to the club and thinking about joining the Seniors Section, we will be more than happy to welcome you into the fold, where you will find a warm and friendly atmosphere. Hopefully over the coming months I will be able to enjoy a round of golf with you in one competition or another, but in the meantime, and when the restrictions are lifted, I will be more than happy for you to come up to me in the bar and introduce yourself, and if you are really lucky, I may even buy you a drink.
The nominated charity for 2021 is being supported by all sections of the club, and is “The Somerset and Dorset Air Ambulance”. The club is renowned for its generous donations to numerous charities over the years, and I am sure this coming year we will continue to contribute generously, no doubt with the help of the “Blobby Pot”.
That is just about me finished, but if you have any questions please feel free to contact me, or any member of the committee, and we will do our upmost to resolve any issue or concerns you may have.
Thank you and I look forward to seeing you soon.
