May I welcome you to the Long Sutton Golf and Country Club Seniors Section. It is my privilege to lead this section as the Seniors Captain; we are a friendly and inclusive club and we are always keen to see new members joining the club and the section.
The Seniors Committee organises a variety of competitions through the year; our roll-ups on Tuesday and Thursday mornings offer golfers, of all abilities, an opportunity to play the game in the company of a great bunch of guys, in a friendly and supportive environment. Tuesday is generally an unstructured roll-up whereas Thursdays offer a range of competitions; these are planned a year in advance and posted on the Club Diary. These include qualifying competitions, Medals and Stableford, to enable you to keep your handicap fully up-to-date. It is a club requirement, in order to maintain a competition handicap, that you play in at least three qualifiers through the year. Please don’t be shy at joining in – you will always be welcome whatever your level of expertise!
We charge a modest £5 annual subscription to allow you to join in the Thursday morning activities and the other social occasions through the year; there is a further weekly charge of £3 to cover the prize pot for the competition you are playing in. In most cases we reward the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place golfers in one of 3 Divisions based upon your handicap; this can be dependent on the number of participants and the nature of the competition. All team competitions feature drawn teams to reflect your preferred tee time and in order to arrive at evenly balanced teams; these teams are usually drawn on a Tuesday afternoon.
We have a busy programme of Inter Club Friendly Competitions which everybody is encouraged to sign up for. Each match is followed by a meal; the charge for this varies slightly from club to club but is usually around the £14 mark – you pay this both at home and away: This covers the Green fee when playing away from home as well as the meal. Home players buy the drinks! We are keen to encourage all members to play in at least a couple of these matches each year; this is a requirement if you wish to be considered for the prestigious annual competition - Golfer of the Year, with the Award being made at our Christmas Dinner.
My Charity this year is SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity. We are hoping to put on some Fund Raising and Awareness Raising Events through the year: with emphasis on the special 2020 Day Celebrations to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE Day which took place on 8th May 1945. This falls on a Friday in 2020; the May Bank Holiday has been moved from the Monday to the Friday to help us commemorate this momentous event. Donations are welcomed throughout the year; we have a long-established tradition of putting out the “BLOBBY POT” every Thursday for the collection of voluntary fines for badly played holes on the course!
It’s been a real pleasure working with Bill Bond last year as his Vice Captain and I hope I can do half as good a job as he has done. We all do things in our own way and I know I will be ably supported by my Vice Captain, Graham Brimble, as well as other members of the Seniors section. If you have any queries or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact us - talk to us and we will do our best to resolve things.
We will all be in for some considerable change over the year ahead so let’s make sure we enjoy the ride and make sure we all contribute our ideas. The Executive Committee, representing all sections of the club, will be meeting monthly to act as a communication channel; Graham and I will do our best to see we attend regularly and report back to the full committee. You can talk to any of us on the committee any time but the members representative is Steve Uzzell; he reports on what is going on within the membership to our meetings every month. Please do keep him informed so that we can help or respond to ideas and issues in whatever way we can.
Len Collin - October 2019
Unfortunately my captain’s year has been somewhat blighted this far. Following my inauguration and our Christmas Lunch, which was a most successful event, even though I forgot to toast the ladies, I was struck down by a back and hip problem. Following that we were hit by the coronavirus which has meant that so far this year I haven’t hit a single ball! It looks like all our matches will be cancelled for this season as we are unlikely to get back to normal running any time soon, even if we are allowed restricted access to the course again.
Nevertheless, I remain hopeful we will get to play some golf soon and start to enjoy some of the glorious weather we have been having recently. In the meantime our new owner, Stuart, and his team have been taking advantage of the fact the club is shut to make some wonderful alterations to the course and the clubhouse. After years of inactivity we will wake up to a newly improved and updated golf club; something we can really be proud of.
I look forward to seeing you all again soon. In the meantime, take care.
