Somerset Bowl – Long Sutton Sneak through
On a glorious Saturday lunchtime at Orchardleigh the LS team set about the defence of its Somerset Bowl crown against Entry Hill. First out John Parkinson and Hugh McQuire, who were locked in a titanic battle but got 1 up late on and held on up the 18th to run out winners 1 up. Meanwhile, second out Norman Banfield and Nick Goodliff were in fine form storming to a 5&4 victory, so 2 from 2 so far. The 3rd match of Gary French and Wesley Allen were struggling and through 7 holes were 5 down, not to worry as match 4 myself and Richard Bartin were 3 up through 8 and match 5 Jamie Brodie and Chris Binding were 4 up. Richard and I lost 6 holes on the spin and went from a commanding winning position to a losing one and whilst we battled hard we lost on the 18th after I hit it out of bounds going for the green in 2 needing a win on the hole to force extra holes. Jamie and Chris too had got on a losing streak and lost 1 down on 18. Match tied at 2-2, so back to Match 3 we go, Gary and Wesley making a fine fight of affairs despite giving 12 shots. As we got further around the course Gary and Wes were eating into the lead of their opponents and when they got to the 16th tee they had squared the match up. A win up the 16th saw them ahead for the first time in the match, and then it was onto the tricky 17th. Wesley had put Gary in the valley of doom but Gary was more than up for the challenge, rolling the putt in up the slope for a 2 and a 2 and1 victory sealing a tense and nerve wracking tie!
Well done Team, Round 2 awaits with Weston Super Mare the opponents.
