On Sunday our Somerset Bowl Team travelled to Mendip Spring to take on Oake Manor, recent matches have seen us pitted against Oake twice in 2 days and this makes the 3rd time in 10 days! Currently as things stood before teeing off we're tied on 1 win a piece. (Lost Pickerage Bowl/Won Avalon League Match away)
Up first was Norman Banfield and Myself, getting 6 shots - we had a good game but a poor short game from myself let them in, eventually going down 3/2. 2nd out were Peter Burch and Lewis Greenwood-King - giving away 3 shots, some great golf played and they were 5 up with 6 to play, the opponents got 2 back but the guys got on the par 5 16th in 3 and Peter slotted home for a 4/2 win. scores now 1:1.
News filtered in from the anchor match - unfortunately Gary French and Stuart Hodder losing out 5/4 - score 1:2
With a crowd gathering around the 16th/17th and 18th to check in on progress of matches 3 and 4, it was clear the finish was going to be tense!
Good news for Long Sutton, we were 1 up on the 17th Tee in game 3 (Andrew Isaacs and Wesley Allen), unfortunately Andrew playing safe with an iron had nudged it OB, and their opponents had pulled it left into the trees, Wes had hit the middle of the fairway with a provisional which Andrew hit to 4 feet, the opponents then left themselves behind a tree after 2 shots, meaning a chip out sideways and another chip that came up short of Andrew and Wes for the same number of shots, so match 3 was going to be decided by a putting competition, needless to say Oake missed and Wes held his nerve from 4 feet to win 2/1. Score 2:2
Jamie Brodie and Chris Binding (JEdward pictured) were match 4, 2 up playing 16, unfortunately they lost this hole, so stood on 17 1 up. Chris hit his tee shot right and was almost out of bounds but Jamie hit a great shot from the rough to get the bal on the same teir as the flag. Oake had gone left but got to the front edge for 2, their next shot coming up 6 feet short. Chris rolled a putt down to 4 feet and after Oake manor missed Jamie was faced with 4 feet to Win their match 2/1 and send Long Sutton through to the Semi Finals. Unfortunately Jamie drove his put through the break and left Chris a twitchy 3 footer to half the hole, the gallery oohing and ahhing. With the hople halved it was down to the 18th 1up.
Oake on the tee first and with 16 guys watching on, lining the length of the par 3, as soon as the ball left the club 16 guys watching stood agast, it always looked big and ended up on the road and out of bounds, all Jamie had to do was get it close to the green, this time his nerve held and he was pin high on the fringe. After Oake failed to hole the provisional ball for 4 the hole was conceeded and Jamie and Chris won 2 up - Match Score 3:2.
A huge congratulations to the team, a truely magnificant effort to reach the Semi finals where we wait for either Mendip Spring or Tall Pines.
