Winter Salva at Long Sutton Sun. 19th Feb. 2017
The day went well: no rain…and delicious steak and ale pie after. A winner! Thank you Roger. As for the golf and the chat…the usual. I heard ‘You’ve got the wrong bag. You’ve forgotten your clubs!’ from Sean, as I arrived for the tee-off with a rather large handbag. At least I was teeing off further down the order...with fewer people to watch. For those at the beginning with a 40 plus audience it must be really intimidating. Our first is not the wide open space the other clubs are used to. Ball after ball went left, down into the trees and when Derek, the Folke Captain, skied his drive a roar went up from his playing partners. You could almost hear the silent prayers: ‘Please don’t let that be me!’ This would only be one shot though. There were plenty of brilliant ones as well. I saw one Folke man put his ball feet from the pin on the 6th and yet he was only half way to the ladies tee on the 16th. I know…that’s a bus drive from the men’s tee, so some could count it a good shot, but still, it seemed to typify the day: in the trees one minute and inches from a hole-in-one the next. The highest score was from Ray Cavill (Wincanton) 34 points. The highest score at Cannington had been 38 points and 37 at Wincanton.
On the day, Long Sutton scored 282, Folke 280, Cannington 272 and Wincanton 252. This gave totals after 3 rounds - Folke 897, Long Sutton 880, Wincanton 856 and Cannington 835. At the start of the day we were lying third, 19 points behind Folke, and we ended the day lying second, 17 points behind Folke. The Final will be at Folke on Saturday, 4th March. Please sign the sheet in the corridor if you would like to play that day. Can we close the gap? I know we will give it a good try!
Thank you to all the team, Nigel, Denise (our highest scorer with 33 points), Angela and Dave, Caroline Hunter, Sean, Tim, John Pearson, Sarah and Steve and last, but not least, John Blackwell. Much appreciated John. Thank you.
